Summary/Abstract: The acdemic societies from Bucovina begin their activity in the second half of the XIX-th century, diffident at the beginning, with actions for the development of the Romanian language and culture. Student societies are also manifesting politically, establishing intense links with Romanians from the Habsburg Empire, from Bessarabia or Romania. This study is dedicated to the history of these societies and to emphasize their role in the development of national emancipation movements in Bukovina until the beginning of the First World War. We focus in particular on the most important student societies – „Arboroasa and „Junimea" - and their cultural and social-political actions. „Arboroasa" had a short, but dense and important existence for the awakening of the national consciousness and which ended its activity dramatically, its spirit being carried forward by "Junimea", with a special role in the preparation of the union with Romania.
