Summary/Abstract: This study tackles a subject of current interest by discussing the potential natural (i.e. geological, cosmic and climatologic) hazards that terrestrial life, and our civilization in particular, might face at any future moment in time. The scientific approach of the natural phenomena (volcanism, earthquakes, floods, landfalls, extreme meteorological phenomena, geomagnetic field inversions) and cosmic hazards (due to solar activity or collisions with asteroids, comets or meteorites) having the potential to cause some major catastrophes is considered in parallel with religious prophecies. This parallel is based on comparing the scientific knowledge (and its prognoses for the future of humanity) with religious prophecies.
