Summary/Abstract: Widespread popularity of Sarajevo-based band Indexi masks their less known work from the sixties, while their contribution to the development of the Sarajevan and Yugoslav popular music is under-researched. The aim of this paper was to present, from cultural historical perspective, a part of the process of localisation of global popular music trends during the sixties. Taking dialectic and critical approach, a discography sample of 13 songs by Indexi, recorded until 1966, was analysed. By exploring historical context, this paper also criticised the claim available in the literature about the first Indexi record being released in 1964, and proposed it happened in 1966 instead. Following the early stage of imitating foreign bands and covering their compositions, primarily the Shadows and the Beatles, Indexi began to write their songs. By following new trends in contemporary Anglo-American popular music, Indexi adopted them and transmitted their elements to the local context, thanks in no small part to the on-going Americanisation of popular culture in Yugoslavia. The paper concluded that Indexi were an authentic rock 'n' roll band because they were among the first groups in Yugoslavia to write their original songs, that were to be widely accepted by local audiences. The crown of their creation in this period was the song "Pružam ruke", which symbolised the moment when Yugoslavia started singing rock 'n' roll in the native language. That way, Indexi left a lasting impact on the development of the popular music scene in Sarajevo and in Yugoslavia. The paper also reiterated the need to release an anthology of previously unissued archival recordings by Indexi, as a part of cultural heritage.
