Summary/Abstract: This paper presents basic assumptions of the collective memory concept by Morris Albvaš. Albvaš influenced the awareness that social context influences the formation of memory. Shapeless individual memory is formed within a framework created through belonging to a group. Personal memories by itself are vague and reconstructed under the influence of social environment. No meaningful memory is possible unless being a group member. Through integration into social groups, individuals accept the social conventions instilled into their consciousness in order to be able to further use them as a framework for shaping their own personal memories. Frameworks of social memories change in time resulting in forgetting some of the specific contests, conventions get adapted and even relevance of the past events is changed. Important items for the group are memorized and irrelevant ones are forgotten.
