Summary/Abstract: Human rights are a subject and a goal of education. Uninterrupted learning, throughout one's life span, is a response, in terms of education, to the challenges of globalization. Learning should be oriented not only towards acquiring new knowledge and skills, but also towards getting to live together with the others, in the sense of communication and cooperation, of encouraging peaceful solutions to conflicts, the respect for cultural diversity and practicing tolerance and democratic participation. Human rights are intermingled with peace, justice, solidarity and sustainable development. “Let's think globally and act locally” means harmonizing one's own interests with those of the others. A European way towards a human rights mentality is the tradition of the cognitive enlightenment, while another one is the spirituality of the Christian religion.
