Summary/Abstract: This review studies the concept and methodological principles underlying the creation of the Linguistic Atlas of the Macedonian Dialects (according to the Data in the Slavic Linguistic Atlas – SLA) published in the middle of 2020. The authors provide a comparison between the adopted phonetic transcriptions and mapping principles and the changes made to dialect and standard names of locations included in the relevant volumes of the Slavic Linguistic Atlas. They go on to identify numerous cases of new, so-called “standard Macedonian” names being established in the Atlas as a way of promoting greater divergence from the Bulgarian language. In addition, the authors trace many of the isoglosses interrupted eastwards and southeastwards in the atlas under review, thus illustrating the large number of common lexical and word-formation parallels in the dialects of the Bulgarian and the Macedonian SLA network which attest to a common origin.
