Summary/Abstract: The approach to historiographic debates and historical policy through the prism of field theory allows us to emphasise the political role that historians play in these debates, a role that a stark contrast between scholarship and politics would tend to minimise. The articulation of two dimensions, vertical (the state instrumentalisation of history) and horizontal (historians’ contributions to that instrumentalisation), aims at showing how memory politics shapes the historiographic field, within which it has significant effects in terms of the professional legitimisation and redistribution of resources. Historical policy consists of exchange relations and implicit transactions, established between the political field and the historiographic field. Therefore, history becomes a science of government.
