Summary/Abstract: Human dignity is often tied to a person. The study examines the possibility of human dignity, provided that the person does not exist. Derek Parfit's utilitarianism of states contemplates the value of states of happiness. It can be assumed that these states have dignity, and thus the human being who owns these states also gains dignity. The study responds to numerous arguments by the Catholic theologian C. V. Pospíšil. The discussion is over whether the absence of a person leads to a inhumane world. The utilitarianism of states that does not assume the existence of a person does not, however, lead to a inhuman world. Utilitarianism of states leads to a humane approach to all sentient creatures who can experience happiness and suffering because it demands maximization of happiness and minimization of suffering. Respect for animals is also intrinsic to parts of the Catholic tradition, especially Franciscan spirituality, which may find some connection with Derek Parfit's utilitarianism of states.
