Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to present the author’s exemplificatory solutions which illustrate the use of didactic translation in teaching Polish grammar to children in Polish diaspora schools (Polish as a heritage language). The exercises presented have been used during Polish classes as pilot research in two American Polonia so-called ‘Saturday schools’. As these studies show, the use of translation techniques should be assessed as a valuable didactic procedure in teaching Polish as a heritage language for several reasons: translation exercises develop students’ mediation competence, strengthen the process of teaching Polish in conditions of multiculturalism and multilingualism, allow students to discover grammar rules independently (which positively affects their understanding and application), are an attractive form of tasks, and, finally, motivate both individual and group work (competition factor). The observations and conclusions presented refer to the one tested age group (10-12 years); the usefulness of translational exercises in other age groups requires further research.
