Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the design of a lexicon of historical abbreviations, a project that aims at bridging a major gap in the Polish lexicography. The authors focus on presenting a selection of essential problems and dilemmas that have already occurred. Special consideration is given to an idea of designing an electronic version of the projected dictionary, which would allow a successive enhancement of the lexicon’s content. It would also be in harmony with the latest postulates in current lexicography, i.e. digitalization of dictionary resources and designing new electronic lexicons.
