Summary/Abstract: The research attempted to identify certain determinants of depression among young adolescents. The relation between predictor variables (student’s gender, selfefficacy and self-esteem, number of children per family, parents’ level of education, parental supervision, perceived social support from family, teachers and peers, dimensions of intimate/close friendships, student’s perception of school overload) and levels of depressive reactions among young adolescents was examined. The research was conducted in November and December 2009 on the sample of 400 7th and 8th-grade students from six Sarajevo Canton primary schools. The sample included 234 girls and 166 boys with an average age of 13.08 (SD=0.76). Instruments: General Self-Efficacy Scale, Rosenberg’s Self-Esteem Scale, Parental Control Scale, Modified Social Support Appraisals Scale, Intimate Friendship Scale, School Overload Scale, The Birleson Depression Self-Rating Scale and Questionnaire of Socio-Demographic Characteristics. According to the results of a standard regression analysis, the predictor variables, such as perceived social support from peers, self-esteem, the student’s perception of school overload, perceived social support from teachers and family, explain the 37% variance of criterion measure of depressive reactions. The coefficient of multiple correlation between predictor variables and criteria equals 0.61 (F=17.04; p=.00). The perceived social support from peers is statistically an extremely significant predictor variable that makes the major contribution to explaining depressive reactions among young adolescents (ß =-.23; p=.00).
