Summary/Abstract: Aucassin and Nicolette, a half prose and half verse Old Picard work from the turn of the 13th century, got a surprisingly good reception throughout Europe over the past century. In Slovakia, it appeared in two translations, published respectively in 1947 and 1975 by V. Beniak and M. Pauliny-Danielisová (in collaboration with G. Slavkovská). This paper seeks to compare their qualities against a set of four criteria: the choice of the source text (the critical edition of the manuscript original), the quality of prose chapters, the quality of verse chapters, and the nature of negative shifts. Despite being faithful to the mainstream translational poetics of the decades they were active in, all three translators did a competent job and were ahead of their time in terms of their sensibility to material aspects of medieval textual identity.
