Summary/Abstract: Theodor Aman is the first painter and the first important artist of Romanian art who followed academic studies in Romania, Italy and France. The first part of his work was composed, especially, under the imperatives of the historical moment which shows paintings of significant aspects of national actions. It then evolves towards painting with scenes from the life of the rich class of Bucharest, still between the local tradition and the openings to Western influences for the modernization of the Romanian society, especially in urban environments. Having essential contributions to the development of higher education, together with Gheorghe Tătărescu, in the development of painting and engraving, he also plays an important role in landscape practice. Theodor Aman este primul pictor, primul artist major al artei românești, format în studii academice din România, Italia și Franța, fapt căruia îi este îndatorat într-o primă parte a operei sale, alcătuită, mai ales, sub imperativele momentului istoric, din tablouri pe teme semnificative ale acțiunilor naționale. Evoluează, apoi, spre pictura de gen cu scene din viața păturii bogate bucureștene, aflată încă între tradiția autohtonă și deschiderile către influențe occidentale de modernizare a societății românești, mai ales în mediile urbane. Având contribuții esențiale în dezvoltarea, la noi, a învățământului superior, alături de Gheorghe Tătărescu, în dezvoltarea picturii și a gravurii, deține și un rol important în practicarea peisajului.
