Summary/Abstract: Through its appearance, symbol and meaning, the mask is an " being-object", detached from the real world. The mask lives tumultuously! In its world the law no longer has canons, the sublime becomes grotesque, the impossible becomes possible. The wearer of the mask loses his identity and enters a role that frees him from tensions, becomes free from rules and laws, and his actions "overturn" the world, creating, for a short time, another world. The mask is normally a part of a costume that adorns the whole body and embodies an important tradition in religion and / or in the social life of the community or of a particular group within the community.
