Summary/Abstract: Composer, conductor, teacher and director of the local Conservatory, Ödön Farkas (1851–1912) played for more than three decades a very important role in the development of the musical culture of Kolozsvár/Klausenburg (today: Cluj, Romania). The Mass in E is one of Ödön Farkas’s early religious works. It was composed around 1875–1879, while Farkas studied at the Academy of Music in Budapest alongside important figures like Kornél Ábrányi and Franz Erkel. Written for choir, soloists and orchestra, the mass won a prize funded by cardinal Haynald, intended for church music compositions. Preserved in manuscript form, the Mass in E by Ödön Farkas is an outstanding romantic work, bearing the sings of Caecilianism.
