Summary/Abstract: The history of Longobards in Italy begins with their invasion in 568 AD. The first thirty years of their presence on the lands of the Roman Empire formed foundations for their further existence as a nation. Gregory the Great, born ca. 540, pope 590–604, was a witness of this historical process. His writings are the most comprehensive source contemporary with the period, which makes it possible to reconstruct the early days of Longobards in Italy. Gregory depicted Longobards as cruel barbarians. Over time his attitude towards them got more neighbourly. His pontificate was a relentless pursuit of peace and protecting the city of Rome against Longobards in which he succeeded.
