Summary/Abstract: What should we call the events of the year 1989? The literature on Eastern Europe generally, and on Poland in particular, suggests a wide variety of descriptive terms-from "revolution" to restoration of "normality. " The lack of consensus on a basic definition may simply reflect the fact that insufficient time has passed; history confers her titles only retroactively. But it is not too early to attempt to choose a name for "1989," because the search prompts a useful re-thinking of familiar concepts. [...]
