Summary/Abstract: Romania's final exit from communism is unthinkable without coming to terms with both its Fascist and Stalinist pasts. Among many other afflictions imposed on Romania by its four-decades-long Communist regime, one of the most enduring and painful has been the suppression and manipulation of memory. Fundamental chapters of the pre-Communist intellectual and political history were self-servingly re-written by the hacks of the Ceausescu dictatorship to accommodate the official national-Stalinist ideology. This monopolistic ideology consisted of a syncretic mixture of decayed Marxist tenets, self-aggrandizing ethnocentric myths, and the unabashed celebration of Ceausescu himself. [...]
