Summary/Abstract: The paper portrays Ivan Frano Jukić’s attempts in legitimizing the reformed Latin script proposed by Ljudevit Gaj. Taking into consideration that the entire process of accepting Illyrian spelling was gradual, the paper primarily focuses on Jukić’s articles and writings published in the 1840s in which he writes about “Fonemic Orthography” (glasoshodni pravopis). Of particular importance is Jukić’s study Početak pismenstva i Napomena nauka kèrstjanskoga. Na službu pučkih učionicah u Bosni (1848), crucial for the dissemination of Illyrian spelling in Bosnia. This spelling book popularized the „new orthography“ in the Franciscan educational system and replaced Stjepan Marijanović’s Bukvar illiti Poçetak slovstva illiriçkog’, i latinskog jezika za uçionice derxave bosanske sloxen (1836), written in Kujundžić spelling.
