Summary/Abstract: The beginning of modern mountaineering or mountain tourism in Bulgaria dates back to 1895 and the Bulgarian capital city played a leading role in its development. In 1899 the First Bulgarian Tourism Association “Aleko Konstantinov” was established in Sofia. In the following years tourism associations were also established in other cities of the country, their status being that of branches of the Bulgarian Tourism Association. In that era tourism in Bulgaria was regarded mainly as mountaineering. The article traces the organizational development of the Bulgarian mountaineering until the First Balkan War and presents its main characteristics and leading activists.
