Summary/Abstract: Intercultural dialogue starts being used in the mid-1990s in many policy areas as a tool with multiple functions, mainly considered as a necessary response to the rapid and major challenges that today’s societies are facing, especially in the context of an increasing cultural diversity. This cultural diversity, which is a historical reality in Europe, becomes a profound trend in the contemporary age, under the influence of economic, social and political factors. The Council of Europe’s documents, in particular the white charter of Intercultural Dialogue, contain important conceptual and terminological specifications, highlighting the content and objectives of intercultural dialogue and its role in accordance with the Council of Europe’s fundamental mission, values and competences: in the promotion of human rights, democracy and of the priority of the law.
