Comparative Analysis of the Original and Domestic Illustrations in Selected Titles of Children´s Literature in Translation

Summary/Abstract: The study deals with the domestic practice in the 60th-80th of the 20th century in publishing of the Slovak translations of literature for children and youth with the original illustrations created by foreign illustrators. It selectively focuses on the most important and world famous illustration artworks that weren´t published in our country (or were published with a certain, sometimes considerable time lag from their creation), despite of their gradually acquired and internationally remarkable iconic connection to the original literary prototext. They are compared with the character of foreign illustrative creations, that, on the contrary, were imported to our cultural environment along with Slovak translations of foreign titles of children’s literature. In cases of domestic re-illustrations, the nature of domestic and original illustrations is analysed and compared. In addition to the comparation of the national specificities, poetological basis and artistic aspects of illustrations, the study addresses the socio-cultural analysis of motivation conditions leading to the publishing of original illustrations or to the re-illustration of the translations.
