Summary/Abstract: This study was designed to examine how gestalt therapists understand and experience the process of acquiring and developing psychotherapy competences and the persona of psychotherapist. It is a qualitative, phenomenological research, in line with this study goal. Fundamental questions were: “How familiar are you with the topic of psychotherapeutic competencies? How does the journey towards the persona of psychotherapist look like from your personal experience? What is really essential in the process of acquiring and developing psychotherapeutic competencies considering your personal experiences?” The sample was suitable. The research was carried out in three already existing supervision groups of between 8 and 11 members that were used as focus groups. There were a total of 27 respondents, 8 students of final, fourth year of education in psychotherapy and 19 graduated psychotherapists. Data were analyzed by thematic analysis and visual analysis methods. The results identified that the participants experience and understand this process as a transforming one, with different phases of transformation. Group and individual psychotherapy were recognized as the main factor of change and precondition for the impact of supervision. Presence, inclusion, commitment to the dialogue and non-exploitation were found to be essential change generators. The results are in line with the spirit of humanistic, existential psychotherapy and with the results of existing research.
