Summary/Abstract: The article deals with long-term research performed by one of the pioneers of Russian Slavic studies, famous mediaevalist and archeographer K.F. Kalaydovich (1792–1832). Rich source materials from the first quarter of the 19th century have been used, including data from personal archives. They show the beginnings and formation of a new scientific discipline – Belarusian philology. The interest in Belarusian culture blossomed in the years 1812–1813 when K. F. Kalaydovich lived on Belarusian lands and learned the Belarusian language. It was later reinforced by his studies and publications devoted to the outstanding monuments of ancient writing among which you can find the 12th century works of St. Cyril of Turov.
