Summary/Abstract: An attempt is made in this article synthetically to set forth and render meaningful the magic healing practices of Bulgarian folk medicine. They are: magical treatments, universal healing methods and media, spell binding, and prayers for the restoration of health. On the basis of the way in which an impact is obtained, the author tries to classify the magic treatments. Folk curative media and ideas about the essence of the sickness are shown. On the basis of a historical and materialistic concept of magic, Bulgarian healing practices of this type are shown as historically conditioned forms of applying the principle of similia similibus curantur (like cures like), characteristic of the early period in the development of medicine.
