Summary/Abstract: Great importance ot the teaching of foreign languages was attached by V. I. Lenin, and this to some extent influenced the development of the theory and practice of teaching of foreign languages in the USSR. In the 20’s and 30’s Soviet glottodidactics was determined by the views of linguists. Anyway, this influence may also be observed in the 40’s and 50’s. In the post-war period teaching of foreign languages was directed according to the assumptions put forth by the well-known linguist, L. W. Shcherba, but until the 60’s the efficiency of teaching of foreign languages was considered insufficient. And this found its expression in the special resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR of May 27 1961. Afterwards new programmes of teaching have been worked out, the related disciplines have been developed (e.g. psychology of teaching of foreign languages, psycholinguistics), new technical didactic aids have been introduced, much appropriate literature is being published, the search for new ways of improving of teaching of foreign languages is conducted. As one can see from what has been said above the Soviet glottodidactics bids the October Revolution in its sixtieth anniversary welcome with great achievements.
