Summary/Abstract: As in the rest of the world, in Macedonia the archives are public institutions. Archives are institutions in which the written, recorded or otherwise created source treasure is stored. Archives constitute the basic and irreplaceable part of the cultural, historical wealth, respectively the cultural treasure of a people, territory or a country. Activities, duties and obligations which are performed in accordance with the archival legislation (Law on archival material, regulations and instructions) are defined in the regulation on internal organization and work. The provisions in this regulation are brought based on the relative legal and sub-legal acts for archival material. The main purpose of each archive is the collection, preservation and distribution of archival material for research - scientific, professional, educational - educational work and other needs of public interest, state bodies, institutions and organizations and other communities for citizens. The duties and obligations of archives as institutions are multiple. However, their main activity is: protection of archival material in the archive and outside the archive (to the possessor, respectively the creator of the archive material); receipt, placement and storage of archival material; arranging and processing archive material; information on funds and archival material from the competencies of the archive; creating conditions for the use of archival material; publication of archival material, information tools for archival material and other publications, which facilitate the use of archival material; exhibition of archival material, organization of lectures; research and copying of archival material in the country and abroad in order to complete the funds in the archive; providing technical protection of archival material. The basic principle of ASHRM, respectively the sector for protection and preservation of archival material, based on legislative policies is: archival material is protected by law regardless of where it is located and whose property it is; it no one may damage, destroy, borrow or infringe upon its entirety in any other form; every possessor of archival material is obliged to provide the conditions of protection and preservation. Archival material as a whole can not be alienated, destroyed and misused, because it is punishable by law.
