Summary/Abstract: Archives are institutions in which the source treasure is stored written, recorded, created, recorded or in another form through documents, records related to various events. The archive preserves the eternity of social memory and humanity in general and is a treasure of a society, nation and country, therefore it is called "Society Memory". This paper addresses the issues of establishment, activity and development of archives in an institutional way in Macedonia and its operation in different periods of time. After the First World War, considering the expansion of the archives reasonable, the Kingdom of Serbo, Croatian, Slovenian with the initiative and professional assistance of the State Archives of Belgrade, the State Archives was established in Skopje on September 28, 1926, which functioned at the beginning. with two employees, and was located in the house of director Delimir Lazarevic. Until 1941 the Skopje archive was a separate institution, then it joined the Museum of Southern Serbia in Skopje. Among the first institutions to collect archival material until the formation of the respective archives in Macedonia were the Institute of National History and the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje. The first archival directorate in the People's Republic of Macedonia was established in 1949, also the historical archive of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Macedonia. The archive material was stored in several institutions until April 1, 1951, when the state archive of the People's Republic of Macedonia was established.
