Summary/Abstract: In the present study, we will examine, from a conceptual point of view, the processes of economic liberalization and protectionism, processes that are occurring in a more and more intense form. International experience shows that free exchange between countries contributes to their economic expansion, and without doubt, to propelling the society into a higher stage of development, based on knowledge. With the world economy entering recession, doubts about the role and the effects of liberalization emerged and the interest in protectionist measures resurged. Both processes, economic liberalization and protectionism, are bringing advantages and they represent important factors of economic and social growth and development and, furthermore, they are pillars supporting the knowledge society.
