Summary/Abstract: Economic liberalization is an intensely debated topic, and its positive effects upon economic growth are generally acknowledged. Because many of the developed countries have achieved an important progress from an economic and social standpoint, by opening their borders for the international trades, an increasing number of developing countries regard liberalization as their only chance to benefit by the (especially technological) products of the industrialized countries, to sell their own production on third markets and, this way, to reduce the economic growth and development gaps. In this paper, we will argue in favor of the importance of economic liberalization in a knowledge-based society, relying upon the conclusions of two reports: Human Development Report and Index of Economic Freedom.
