Summary/Abstract: Civil air transport in the area of Central Dalmatia, more precisely in the area of the City of Split, was organized by the Aeroput airline company. Air transport started in 1931, followed by a long cessation of activities until 1939, when it picked up again until 1940. In the summer of 1936 the Czechoslovakian airline ČSA introduced flights with its amphibious aircrafts, connecting Prague and Split via Zagreb and Sušak, however these flights were short-lived due to frequent engine failure. The greatest problem in the organization of civil air transport in the area of the city of Split was the lack of an adequate airport. The only airport in use at the time was the one in the town of Sinj, but this was too far removed from the city and could be used only in the summertime due to unfavourable weather conditions in the rest of the year. After the Second World War the Sinj airport was again used from 1951 until 1966, when a new modern airport called Split was built in the nearby town of Kaštela.
