Summary/Abstract: Intense maritime traffic had been generated for centuries along the Central Dalmatian coast (the region that stretches from Cape Planka and as far as the delta of the river Neretva); since there was a significant lack of safe roads on the mainland and land transportation per se was practically non-existent. A significant number of maritime accidents were a direct result of intense maritime traffic in the period between the late 19th century and the early 1940’s. These accidents were also recorded by the local press. There were many reasons behind the accidents: breaches of regulations, overloading of cargo and passenger ships and, finally, employing incompetent members of the crew, who, in turn, failed to respond to weather conditions and act accordingly. Salvage services were not offered at the time although there were several attempts at their establishment. None, however, was successful.
