Summary/Abstract: From the mid-13th century to the early 17th century, Herburt coat of arms displayed a shield with an apple pierced with three swords. However, since the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries, particular bearers of this coat of arms have added the figure of the cross above the apple. Simultaneously, one can note considerable differences in terms of colours of particular figures, especially when helmets and their insignia are concerned. Customarily, Herburt coats of arms have crests with peacock or ostrich feathers; yet, discrepancies in their number and colour (along with the change of colour of the mantling and the figures on the shield) make it possible to distinguish 19 versions of the coat of arms, as used by various members of the heraldic clan. Such variability of the secondary elements of the coat of arms was typical of both Czech-Moravian and Russian branches of the clan. In the latter case, the noted variability appears to have been a sui generis continuation of the traditions characteristic of coats of arms in the lands of the Crown of Bohemia.
