In the face of challenges – half a century of functioning of the customs union in the European Union

Summary/Abstract: The customs union is one of the earliest and most significant achievements of the European Union. The 50th anniversary if its existence must be acknowledged as a crucial moment in the history of the EU as well as a good opportunity to reflect on its role and relevance. The aim of the article is to indicate and assess the most important achievements of the European customs union and, at the same time, to consider its future objectives. The methodology employed in the paper consists in a descriptive analysis, preceded by a review of the subject literature and the EU secondary legislation. The research findings allowed a conclusion to be drawn that the fifty years of the customs union history have shown that the customs system functioning within the EU has successfully performed its roles, quickly adapting to new challenges and ever-increasing demands. The further development of the customs union is critical and requires flexibility as well as efficiency.
