Summary/Abstract: The basic source of information about Plato (735-814) is the song Laudatio S. Platonis archimandritae (PG 99, 804-849), which was written by St. Theodore the Studite (759-826) in a form of a praise song, as a tribute to his uncle after his death. The parents of Plato were Sergius and Euphemia, members of a wealthy and well-known Constantinople family. Plato had two sisters. One of them remained a lay person, while the other one, Theoktiste, the mother of St. Theodor, in her later years decided to dedicate herself to a monastic life. Initially he choose the life of a recluse in the vicinity of Mount Olympus in Bithynia, the region located on the east coast of Asia Minor. Later he became the ihumen of Symbola Monastery, and the Sakkoudion. He took part in the second Council of Nicaea (787), where he spoke out in defense of sacred images. He was subject to great humiliation on the part of the emperors: Constantine VI (780-797) and Nikephoros I (802-811). Plato died in 814, at the age of 79.
