Social mobility and marital homogamy in Poland

Summary/Abstract: This paper presents findings on the changes in social stratification in Poland, with particular attention given to mobility and marital choices. The author begins with an overview of the concept of social mobility, i.e. shifting of individuals or other categories in social space, including its definitions, indicators, patterns and mechanisms. Next, based on a set of empirical data, the author discusses the patterns of mobility and martial choices in the aftermath of 1989 transition in Poland. Special attention is given to the analysis of the openness of Polish society, opportunities for intergenerational mobility and its consequences.
