Summary/Abstract: The author examines the variability in the geography of Spanish concerning the grammatical opposition he cantado / canté, and reviews a series of meaningful descriptions of the grammatical value of the Spanish “pretérito perfecto” and its most remarked uses in the history of Spanish linguistics to conclude that the value of this unit can be plausibly described in temporal terms like that of an “ante-present” (this was already Bello’s proposal), and also in this case is neither necessary nor always possible the resort of an aspectually-based functional characterization.
