A Contemporary Image of a Teacher in Social Media on the Example of YouTube – a Case Study

Summary/Abstract: RESEARCH OBJECTIVE: The article is about shaping a teacher’s image on YouTube, in materials addressed to teenagers, on the example of the WAKSY channel. The research perspective adopted focuses not on how the school can use the media, but how the media use the subject of the school to reach young audiences. THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND METHODS: In the article all the films published on the WAKSY channel have been subjected to a qualitative content analysis. The research allowed to show the basic stereotypes about teachers. The results of the analysis were confronted with the comments of the website users. THE PROCESS OF ARGUMENTATION: This study draws attention to the ubiquity of the media in the world of modern teenagers. Social networks, used today as a source of knowledge about the world, constitute a source of attitudes and explain phenomena from social life. They can, even in the unconscious way, shape the image of the surrounding world. RESEARCH RESULTS: Scientific analysis has revealed seven extremely negative teacher images, which are presented to the recipients in the film materials on the discussed channel. They concern issues that are very important in didactic and educational work, but they distort the image of the teacher and present him as an enemy of the student. CONCLUSIONS, INNOVATIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS: Comments of YouTube users suggest that in their school students look for confirmation of the teachers’ image presented on the WAKSY channel. The image of the teacher as an enemy, adopted from social media, may be the source of students’ negative behavior. For better understanding of the phenomenon, further research is recommended, including also other school-related channels and films.
