Summary/Abstract: The study draws attention to one of the extremely significant aspects of modern non- mainstream theatre – its non-theatrical culture-forming activity, which alternative theatre – in the period of Polish political transformation after 1989 – develops consistently, professionally and in a multidimensional way. This paper has been divided into two parts. The first is a brief introduc- tion to various domestic and foreign concepts in the field of cultural animation, also covering its dissemination, the concept of “active culture”, community arts and audience development, which are helpful in grounding specific activities and examples of non-theatre activities of independent artists in theories. The second part gathers, documents and organizes knowledge about manifold culture-forming initiatives in Poznań, showing the scale and diversity of the phenomenon.
