Summary/Abstract: The Romanians were not a warlike nation self-differentiating and being characterized by others as hospitable in peacetime and tolerant in war. When circumstances forced it, Romania fought for its interests. Result of popular humanism and of reception of humanitarian conventions into national law, followed by thorough military training on their provisions, Romanians' behavior in times of armed conflict was based on compliance with the laws and customs of war. Even if there were in certain circumstances also some excesses, like that of reprisals from Odessa in October 1941 or the unresolved until today's "terrorists" in December 1989 and all the vicissitudes of the dictatorships it went through, the historical elements of the wars waged by Romania demonstrates the effectiveness of implementation of international humanitarian law in our country.
