Summary/Abstract: My essay presents the aesthetic and ideological functions of the themes of mountains and their inhabitants in the prose of Wojciech Kuczok, a well-known writer, who is also a mountaineer and a spelunker. The culture of the Tatra highlanders (their language and customs) appears already in Kuczok’s early stories, and recurs throughout his oeuvre (short stories, novels, film essays, autobiographic forms). The main focus of my text is the novel entitled Spiski. Przygody tatrzańskie [Conspiracies. The Tatra Adventures] (combining realism with fantasy) and Poza światłem [Out of Light], the first non-fiction work by Kuczok, describing his travels in Poland and abroad, as well as his expeditions into high mountains and into caves.
