Summary/Abstract: The article analyzes the debate which took place in the Macedonian parliament in December 2018 about the introduction of amendments to the constitution - including the change of the country’s name to “Republic of North Macedonia.” The two main political actors of the debate were: the right-wing VMRO-DPMNE party and the Social Democrats with Prime Minister Zoran Zaev at the lead. The theoretical framework of the analysis determines the cultural concept of the nation by Anthony D. Smith and the notion of mitomotorics introduced by Jan Assmann. Focusing primarily on the right-wing emotional narration, the author analyzes the concept of the nation as historical and immutable, marked by graves of previous generations and sacred, as well as faith in the causative power of words and the role of self-determination in the nation-building process. The analysis includes the history of Macedonia, and its character as a multinational and multiethnic state.
