Summary/Abstract: The successful development of geography at the University of Warsaw was interrupted by WorldWar II and the Nazi occupation. Not only the rooms occupied by geography before the war but also furnitureand research instruments were destroyed. The book collection was dispersed and partly destroyed. Head ofthe Geographical Department prof. Stanisław Lencewicz was killed in Warsaw in 1944, and the head of theDepartment of Anthropogeography prof. Bogdan Zaborski remained abroad after the war and contributed tothe development of Canadian geography. In this situation, the re-launch of geography after the war can hardlybe regarded as a continuation of previous activities. It clearly had the character of a “second beginning”.The article presents selected issues related to the reactivation of both geographical departments, the establishmentof the Geographical Institute of the University of Warsaw and the beginnings of its activities afterWorld War II.
