Summary/Abstract: As every Bosnian schoolchild knows, or should do, the Ottoman campaign to take Vienna in 1683 marked not just the high point of Ottoman penetration into Europe, but also a turning point. It marked the beginning of Ottoman retreat from central Europe to consolidate weakly and, ultimately, unsuccessfully in its Balkan domains, before being forced out of Europe almost entirely. This was accompanied by the advance of the Hapsburg dynasty and its own consolidation within its “traditional” trans-leithanian lands. In many ways, for the Habsburgs this was less a Reconquista than a bona fide conquest, establishing rule over these areas and, indeed, over some nominally already under their suzerainty for the first time.
