Summary/Abstract: Drawing his inspiration from Kierkegaard’sconsiderations about the aesthetical stage and Nietzsche’s idea of a “great style” ofself-creation, but most of all from his rediscovery of ancient Greek and Latin ethicsunder the sign of the Socratic principle of “care of the self”, Foucault will advance, inhis last years, the ideal of an “aesthetics of existence” conceived as a way of subjectivationwhich is both ethical and aesthetical. In this paper I try to explore, drawing on Foucault, the possibility of understanding self-creation as a personal project that reconciles thevariations of the aesthetic game with the ethical seriousness of a life conduct. I willpresent a brief history of the philosophical idea of self-creation, in order to suggestmultiple ways of understanding the ethical work on ourselves by analogy with theprocess of artistic creation.
