RELATIONS BETWEEN AZERBAIJAN – EUROPEAN UNION IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD POLICY AND THE EASTERN PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM

Summary/Abstract: The year 2004 is very important for Azerbaijan - EU relations. Since 2004, Azerbaijan has been included in the European Neighborhood Policy and thus Azerbaijan-EU relations have gained a new dimension. Azerbaijan's participation in the European Neighborhood Policy has enabled this country to develop its basic EU criterias such as democracy, the rule of law and fundamental freedoms. On the other hand, within the framework of the Neighborhood Policy, the EU provides financial assistance for the liberalization of the Azerbaijani economy and the energy sector to reach EU standards. Azerbaijan-EU relations have entered a new stage since 2009 with the EU “Eastern Partnership” Program. In this study, Azerbaijan-EU relations are examined from the perspective of European Neighborhood Policy and Eastern Partnership Program.
