Summary/Abstract: The article presents an overview of different phonetic phenomena attested in the Cretan dialect of Modern Greek from the point of view of their historical development. These dialectal features may be also observed in the Modern Cretan hydronyms (from 13th to 20th c. AD), especially in the names of small streams and sources. All the water names, which are known only in a limited area of the island, register most phonetic phenomena discussed in this paper.
