Summary/Abstract: The study presents a hypothesis about the sound symbolic origin of Lat. cucullus ‘hood’. The following criteria are taken into consideration. The word and its borrowings in other languages are characterized by formal variation. There is evidence of violations of phonetic laws in the evolution of the borrowings. Reduplication, which is a reliable structural feature of phonetically motivated words, can be seen in Lat. cu-cull-us. An important criterion is the formal and semantic parallelism with other words with reduplication expressing meanings ‘cover’, ‘wrap’, ‘hood’. The sound symbolic origin of the word is also evidenced by the relations of homonymy with other words, for which the sound symbolic origin is possible as well. In some of the borrowings a secondary onomatopoeization can be seen.
