Summary/Abstract: The main object of the text is a critical and parallel edition of the two oldest registers of Tartu/Dorpat property owners: a Polish version of 1582 from the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw (AGAD, Archiwum Zamoyskich, nr 2921) and a High German revision of 1601 from the Estonian Historical Archives in Tartu (Eesti Ajalooarhiiv, f. 995, n. 2, s. 583). For a long time these two sources were thought to be lost, but two happy discoveries have brought them to light. The present edition allows for a relatively accurate reconstruction of street names, the condition and purpose of each building in the town, and the names of their owners. The Polish language version of 1582 was composed by Stanisław Łoknicki, an oeconomus of Jan Zamoyski, Lord Grand-Chancellor and Grand Herman of the Polish Crown. It shows Tartu shortly after it was claimed by Polish troops from Moscow (its rulers from 1558-1582). At the beginning of Polish rule in Tartu (1582-1600/25), the town was largely destroyed; many buildings and churches had been burned. Most owners’ names were of German and Polish origin. Jesuits from Germany and Poland appeared in the town, with the intention to establish a school there. The Poles planned to rebuild the town. Tartu was subject to Swedish rule for a while in 1601, and during this period a new revision of the town register was prepared, in the High German language and on the basis of the 1582 document. Despite the war of 1600/01, Tartu did not suffer as much damage as in 1582. Street names and the names of most of the inhabitants are German.
