Gone with the Winds of Change: Families of Odessa University Intelligentsia and the Revolution of 1917

Summary/Abstract: The article is devoted to the study of families of Russian intelligentsia in Odessa, one of the biggest cities of the Empire at the turn of the 20th Century. Taking the academic families as a case study, the author focuses on the peculiarities of their development around the momentous year of 1917. The article deals with the relationships of parents and children in the families of intelligentsia, the role of priests, internal and external influences in the families’ lives. It shows the specificity of intelligentsia in Odessa and efforts to preserve its status after the calamitous political change in the country. The author also reveals the fates of families that found themselves in emigration after 1917 and their adaptation to the new environment and new circumstances of existence.
